Better Homes & Gardens - Are Formal Living Rooms Obsolete? Not According to Top Design Experts

Thank you, Better Homes & Gardens, for showcasing us in this feature about how to design a space where life happens!

"Having an entire room in your home dedicated to guests and formal seating just doesn’t make sense for most people anymore. Flexibility and efficiency is what’s current—rooms that have double and even triple uses." —Nadia Watts

Mix Art with Metals - Mixing materials is one way to achieve a modern effect when it comes to a gallery wall. “I love to hang whimsical metal sculptures alongside colorful abstract paintings to create balance and structure. The result is a fun-filled wall that feels fresh and purposeful,” says Nadia Watts, the owner of Nadia Watts Interior Design.

I suggest:

MAKE THE VERY MOST OF YOUR WALL ART

Think about where you hang your frame too, urges Nadia Watts of Nadia Watts Interior Design. ‘Most people hang their art too high; this can make even the fanciest art look cheap.  A good rule is to hang your art at 60” from the floor, and centered.’

'Once you have it hung correctly, light it up!  There are a lot of great products on the market for this, including wireless art lights that you can stick right on your wall, and angled can lights that will allow you to light your artwork from the ceiling,’ adds Nadia.

MOVE WALL ART

For designer Nadia Watts, art gallery vibes balance otherwise neutral furnishings.

Rotate your art as if you’re in a gallery. You’ll be amazed at the difference a simple tweak can make. Changing the location of your art can dictate a novel approach to transforming the rest of your living room space. Denver-based Nadia Watts of Nadia Watts Design brought in a grouping of artwork from other rooms to curate a new aesthetic by pulling colors from the paintings into the pillows. “This created a new relationship in the room that was not there,” she says.

Swap pillow covers

Swapping pillow covers is a simple way to shift living room design. Nadia Watts likes to “freshen up” a room by changing all the printed throw pillows to bold and solid colors. Color blocking sends a message that the room is polished and no-nonsense. Patterns, on the other hand, create playfulness and exude a certain personality.

Denver Designer Show House: Foyer

In 2011, I was thrilled to participate in the Denver Designer Show House, a project to support The Children’s Hospital. Twenty-eight Colorado designers pitched in to give this century-old, historic Tudor in Denver’s Country Club neighborhood a fresh look before it went on the market for the first time ever!
