Thank you to House Beautiful and Kate McGregor for the feature—I love sharing my insights with such a talented group!

‘I love the many rounded-edge options now available. No longer is kitchen hardware square or rectangular with sharp edges… I am also seeing more historical and antique hardware emerge in residential projects. And I find vintage hardware hard to beat in terms of its quality and craftsmanship. There is nothing better than sifting through some old wood panels or cabinet drawers at an antique store and coming across some gorgeous old hardware.’ —Nadia Watts.

'Blue is a classic color that works well with a variety of styles and finishes. Choose a light and bright neutral countertop to balance the blue. I chose a mix of materials to compliment the blue cabinetry, from chrome to antique brass, traditional to modern, the beauty of blue is that it's a classic color with traditional elements that can also span the eras of design seamlessly,' explains Nadia.

Farrow & Ball Mizzle and Down Pipe

Teaming up Farrow & Ball's Mizzle and Down Pipe is a failsafe color combination for Denver-based interior designer Nadia Watts. In the kitchen shown above, Nadia used Mizzle as the main color choice across the kitchen cabinet ideas, adding contrast with Down Pipe for the kitchen island ideas

'It's hard to choose just one favorite from Farrow & Ball,' she begins. 'I love the combination of Mizzle and Down Pipe. These in-between colors are almost like a neutral, they work well with so many other colors and patterns. Mizzle is a soft gray-green reminiscent of a misty drizzle, hence the name. The gray undertones work well with Down Pipe, which also has gray undertones. Down Pipe has a deep blue hue which brings complexity and richness. These two colors work great for cabinetry as well as walls. Because they are in between colors, they play well with others and will withstand trends.'

Oversized Handles

'A unique mix of materials and textures for kitchen cabinet knobs are having their moment including leather, Lucite, acrylic, wood and stone,' says Nadia Watts, founder of Nadia Watts Interior Design. 'Integrated pulls are sleek and functional and handleless cabinets are all the rage. Sleek, clean lines still rule with knobs and handles going incognito allowing simplicity to shine and the cabinetry to take center stage. On the flip side of the modern streamlined approach, vintage and antique styles are in, with distressed finishes and unique one of a kind vintage inspired designs.'

Pondering Pendants

Choosing the right light fixture for a kitchen island is an important step in your kitchen design. You want something beautiful and functional, right? So here are my tips for creating a perfect combination of island size, ceiling height, and pendant size.

In this kitchen....

Island Size: 46" wide by 94" long

Ceiling Height: 8'

Pendant Size: 13 1/2" wide by 21 1/2" high (to the top of were the 3 chains meet).

The family uses this island table as the main eating area. (So we needed something especially beautiful, since they would spend so much time there!) We chose this lighting fixture because it's so unique and adds a focal point to the room. We didn't use pendants over the other island in the kitchen that serves as a work space with a sink because we didn't want anything to compete with these lights. Aren't they gorgeous?

In this kitchen....

Island Size: 48"wide by 118"long

Ceiling Height: 10'

Pendant shade size: 4 3/4" wide at top x 15" slant x 12 3/4" wide at bottom

Because the ceiling is 10 feet high, we could get away with a more dramatic presentation. (Hooray for drama!) We chose three light fixtures to create a presence over the island. Do you love it?
